A letter from Jason Smith, Managing Director Â
Dear Farms Work Wonders Family and Friends,
As we stand at the threshold of a new year, I take great pride in reflecting on the incredible journey our nonprofit has embarked upon over the past seven years. What started as a simple idea, to provide employment opportunities for ten local youth, has evolved into something beyond our wildest dreams.
In the early days, our vision was to create a positive ripple in the community. Little did we know that this small seed would sprout into five flourishing businesses, boasting a team of over 100 dedicated employees, each contributing to our shared success. The growth we have experienced has been nothing short of remarkable, a testament to the untapped potential within our small town, especially the youth.
We have celebrated moments of triumph, weathered tough times and learned from our mistakes along the way. Each challenge fueled our determination to transform our vision into the successful reality we find today. I want to acknowledge the hard work and resilience of everyone who has been a part of this journey, contributing to the vibrant tapestry that defines our organization.
This year’s impact graphic showcases some of our valued successes and milestones since we started. One significant achievement this year was the opening of Mack’s Bingo Kitchen. This project, years in the making, created over 40 new jobs in Wardensville last year. Mack’s was born from the idea of providing a well-rounded hospitality learning experience for youth to complement the opportunities offered in our farm, market, bakery, and glass studio. We also aimed to provide a casual, approachable, yet exceptional experience through food, drink, and hospitality to our community. It’s been a crazy couple of months since it opened and we’re surprised to learn we won Best New Restaurant from WV Living Magazine.
This past year has been one of transition and reflection, marked by the passing of our dear friend and champion, Jonathan D Lewis. His legacy continues to inspire us, and we are committed to honoring his memory by carrying forward the torch of positive change. I am honored to have known Jonathan personally and shared collaborations with him in the past. I can attest to the indelible impact of his distinctive approach — simultaneously challenging directly and expressing genuine personal care and support—a style that continues to motivate us daily.
Looking ahead, our focus remains unwavering. We are committed to expanding our impact, reaching more youth, and creating even more opportunities for them. The spark of curiosity that ignited our initial efforts will continue to be fanned into a flame, lighting the way for Appalachian youth to explore, learn, be challenged, and thrive.

Our mission is to ignite the spark of curiosity within Appalachian youth, so they see themselves and their futures in new and exciting ways. We do this through our food, farm, and arts-based nonprofit social enterprises where youth are provided employment and gain essential skills.
As we enter our tenth year, we’re reflecting on the road we’ve traveled together—and the young people at the heart of it all. For nearly a decade, Farms Work Wonders has built real opportunities for Appalachian youth through meaningful work, shared craft, and community-supported businesses. Every visit, every meal, and every handmade piece helps make that possible.
As we celebrate our 7th year, we wanted to take a moment to share news of our new rebrand, our new website, and our new restaurant! We are overwhelmed with pride as we reflect on the milestones we have achieved together. It is because of your passionate support and our dedicated team that we have been able to make a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals.
